A few days ago in the blog I explored the teachings of Al-Anon and the twelve step programs as they pertain to choices we make (read that post here). Many helping professionals encounter issues of addiction in their work. Many of these same helping professionals went into their line of work because they grew up with these issues and want to make a difference in the lives of others. If addiction enters into your world in any form, whether in your personal or professional life, I recommend attending a twelve step meeting to see what they are all about. This is especially important if you have any clients who attend twelve step meetings.
“Al‑Anon is a mutual support program for people whose lives have been affected by someone else’s drinking.” http://al-anon.org/
If you are a professional who works with addiction, this statement applies to you. It is easy to become frustrated by clients who make unhealthy or unsafe choices because of addiction. I have come to realize that when I was facing that sort of frustration in my work, it was because I could not control my clients’ actions. Refocusing my attention on what choices I can make as a professional, and recognizing the limits of my ability to help, make it easier for me to continue to provide support without taking things home or burning out.
Here are a few links to find a meeting near you:
I think you will find that even if you are going to a meeting to gain insight into the struggles of your clients, you will also gain insight into yourself. As helping professionals it is crucial that we continue to do our own inner work so that we can best help others.
Please share, ask questions, leave comments, suggest topics, and tell stories! I want to hear about your moments of magic, miracles, and synchronicity.
Dare to be immortal.
